Hello Everyone! It's that time of year again. Spring is trying its best to warm and cheer us up! We definitely have some cheerful news at Suds N' Scents! Many thanks to all who have supported our tiny shop, we are on the move again! Try over double the size we currently have almost 1,000 sq. feet. Oh Yeah, Baby! We knew our tiny shop was a trial run - we were either going to move on or just go back home. "Well, there ain't no goin back, Jed". The Clampets got grumpy again and it was time to move on! Just a little Move Debby has a thing about being close
to home, so we're not wandering too far We're looking forward to this move with more space for browsing, moving around freely and more comfortable classes! Watch for the Grand Re-Opening We are planning the grand opening
for the beginning of May. We don't know when the official date is
(yet) so check We would love to see you! Staff Profile We are very pleased and proud to profile a wonderful woman that assisted us and played a big part in the continued growing of Suds N' Scents. Trish Holmes came to us in June, 2001 which I'm sure many of you have met already. She has an interesting background and totally un-related to what she is doing now! Trish comes from a US military family life which meant she traveled a lot. She spent much of her professional life in accounting and administration (in a closet - or very small space) so moving into our small space in Delbrook was like home to her! Trish has just completed an Introduction to Aromatherapy course and is very keen to share her new knowledge! Trish has proven to be very enthusiastic and helpful. She loves working with people and likes the fact that people come to our shop to have fun! She is very knowledgeable and a great person to talk to and ask questions. Welcome Alice! I would like to offer a warm welcome to our second young lady, Alice de Boer coming on board this April. She is a registered BC Esthetician geared towards the use of natural products. Alice has also had training in Aromatherapy and Herbology so who knows what we will be doing next! Alice loves crafts of all kinds and would love to teach soap making craft classes. Alice & her hubby, Derek are building a summer house in Garden Bay on the Sunshine Coast where she hopes to offer classes there as well. New Products & Services Endlessly adding to our fine fragrance line, we are pleased to offer even more new fragrances. Did you know most of our fragrance oils have more staying power in soap than most essential oils? So for those looking for scent and staying power you may want to consider combining fragrance oils with essential oils. New Label machine Are you looking for that added look of professionalism in labeling your finished products? We are pleased to introduce our new label machine. We can offer 4 different labels at this time:
If you have a logo, or picture on disc - we can import and print on your labels. Label set up fee starts at $35.00 As requests come in, our label line will increase. Please feel free to enquire. Label Watch FD&C are approved for use in food, drugs and cosmetics. D&C are approved for use in drugs and cosmetics - not food.

We are improving our classes. We will be changing our class formats slightly to offer new recipes, ideas, etc. We are also pleased to
offer 5 new classes starting in May, 2002.
Our Birthday parties are becoming very popular and we are planning to offer 2 - 3 different formats for these parties. Until now, our birthday parties have been offered as a mobile unit only. Some Moms have expressed interest in holding birthday parties in our new shop. With the re-opening in our new location, we plan to offer our birthday parties in-house. Stay Tuned! Parent and Youth
Workshops Reiki Workshops Reiki is an activator, releaser and transformer of energy. It is simple to use and very effective. Reiki relaxes and balances the mind, body and spirit. When the body relaxes, breathing becomes easier, increasing the blood flow through the body and boosting the immune system. This gentle hands-on healing technique enhances other medical treatments. The gift of healing is available to everyone. It is not a gift given only to a few. Once you are attuned to the Reiki energy, -opening of the healing channel begins. Once attuned to the Reiki energy - it remains with you for life. Healing means to make whole, to accept and love all parts of yourself. Disease is often the result of stress, worry, fears and an unwillingness to change. We want everyone around us to change but are often unwilling to change ourselves. It is your responsibility to change your thought processes and make changes in your life. Reiki can assist this process by giving you the energy to change areas in your life that need attention. New Preservative To preserve or not to preserve. This is personal but we should consider the following: When we want products to last for a period of time, we must use an approved and recognized preservative for use in cosmetics. If we don't mind making small batches often, then preservatives won't interest you. When we bake, we know our baked goods won't last so we either a) eat them happily or b) store them in the freezer, unless c ) they're xmas cakes loaded with alcohol. However, if you love your lotions, creams, etc. but either don't have a) much time to repeat this process every 2-3 weeks or b) not willing to keep in the fridge - then we must look at preservatives. A wonderful new preservative at Suds N' Scents is Liquipar Optima which is considered a full spectrum preservative (for longer term shelf life), easy to use and mixes well in oil/water emulsions. Primary uses include: lotions, creams, ointments, exfoliants, lipsticks, liquid & cream makeups, eyeliners, mascaras, etc. Full spectrum means it covers fungi, yeast, molds, helps to destroy harmful bacteria, micro-organisms, etc. that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Liquipar Optima is an approved preservative for use in Canada, USA, Japan and most other countries. It is very important when Japan approves an item for use in cosmetics as they are quite fussy (this makes me feel safe). The proper usage for intended protection is .5 - 1% percent of the total weight of the ingredients (depending on the application). To slow down rancidity of oils in your lotions, balms, etc. here is some information on antioxidants: Natural Antioxidants: Antioxidants primary function is to prevent fats/oils from spoiling. They shouldn't be confused with germicidal type preservatives. Popular antioxidants are Grapefruit seed extract and Vitamin E. They are excellent additives to cold process soap, lotions, ointments, lip balm etc. There has been a great deal of media coverage on grapefruit seed extract and bacteria. Grapefruit seed extract may offer some antibacterial qualities for 2-3 weeks but is not considered a full spectrum. The chemical companies will tell you one thing and the naturalists will tell you another. All I can say is if you're serious - take your lotion to a lab and have it tested.
